About

Meet Vera

Vera Hylands started painting murals in Sri Lanka, where she built a small reputation for translucent, dreamy interior work — botanical, forest, and magical-fairytale scenes painted intuitively on smooth interior walls.

Life moved her to Belfast, and she's now restarting in Northern Ireland with more experience, more confidence, and the same painterly, hand-finished style — on walls and on canvas. Vera also paints original paintings for sale and takes on bespoke painting commissions.

How it works

From first message to finished wall

  1. 01

    Get in touch

Tell us about your space, rough dimensions, what you've got in mind, and your rough timeline.

  2. 02

    Concept & quote

You choose a theme and rough colour palette. Vera responds with a written quote and a feel for the direction — but the artwork itself is painted intuitively, so the finished mural is always a small surprise. No two are the same.

  3. 03

    Painting

Most murals are painted on-site over 2–5 days, working around your home. Vera paints on smooth walls already base-coated in white or beige — if your wall needs plastering or prep first, she can recommend someone (priced separately).

  4. 04

    Finish & care

You get a sealed, durable mural and a short care guide. Touch-ups available if life happens.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How much does a hand-painted wall mural cost?

Vera prices per square foot, depending on the size of the wall, level of detail, and surface preparation. See the pricing page for the breakdown, or send a short message describing your space, dimensions, and theme — she'll come back with a written quote within a week.

How long does a mural take to paint?

Most residential murals take 2–5 days on site. Larger commissions, commercial pieces, or murals with very fine detail can take a week or more. Vera will give you a firm timeline with your quote.

Do you travel outside Belfast?

Yes — Vera works across Northern Ireland, including Lisburn, Bangor, Newtownards, Newry, Derry/Londonderry and the surrounding areas. Travel beyond a 30-minute radius from Belfast is quoted as a small addition.

Is a hand-painted mural better than wallpaper?

A hand-painted mural is one-of-a-kind, designed to your exact space, and finished by hand with no seams. Wallpaper is faster and cheaper for standard sizes, but it's printed, repeatable, and limited to rectangular walls. For nurseries and feature walls where the room is the focal point, hand-painted murals last longer and feel completely different.

Can murals be painted over later?

Yes. Vera uses standard, paintable wall paints, so the mural can be painted over with two coats of emulsion when you're ready. Many clients keep them for years.

Do you do commercial work — cafés, restaurants, hotels?

Yes, for both murals and paintings. For mural commissions, Vera paints decorative interior scenes (botanical, forest, magical-fairytale) but doesn't paint logos, brand artwork, or anything corporate. For commissioned paintings, there's no subject restriction — a café could commission anything in Vera's nature-inspired painterly style. Send a brief either way.

How do I book?

Send a message via the contact form or DM @vera.murals on Instagram with a short description of your space and what you're imagining.

Do you paint outdoors or on exterior walls?

No — Vera paints interior walls only. The painterly, translucent style needs the controlled conditions of an indoor space.

Does my wall need any preparation?

Yes. Vera paints on smooth interior walls already base-coated in white or beige. If your wall needs plastering, sanding or a base coat first, that's not part of the mural commission — but Vera can recommend a decorator who'll handle it (priced separately).

What does your style look like?

Translucent, dreamy, painterly. Not photorealistic, not cartoon. Vera works in soft layers — themes like underwater worlds, botanical scenes, forests, cottage gardens, and magical-fairytale palettes. See the portfolio for a few finished murals and originals.

How much does it cost to commission a painting?

Painting commissions are priced per piece, starting from around £250. The size of the canvas, level of detail, and the surface all affect the final price. Send a short brief and Vera replies with a written quote within a week. See the painting commissions page for the full process.

Do you sell original paintings as well?

Yes — Vera paints original acrylic pieces on canvas in her signature translucent, dreamy style. Available paintings live on the Originals page. To buy or ask about availability, email vera@veramurals.com or DM @vera.murals on Instagram.
